Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu

FORMS

Traditional Kung Fu has forms, or sequences of movements in which knowledge of techniques, rhythms, breathing and the entire system’s knowledge about fighting is stored. Forms are like living encyclopedias. They are also a practical way to train coordination, reflexes, flexibility, strength and stamina. Alone forms will not teach you to fight, but combined with good instruction and interaction in class with your Kung Fu brothers and sisters, they are a powerful tool. Most martial arts, Asian, European or otherwise, have some analogue to Kung Fu forms. Even martial sports, such as boxing, review techniques without a partner either in a fixed or unfixed sequence, namely drills and shadow-boxing, respectively.

The traditional sequence for learning to fight is to learn forms, two-man forms, applications, practice sticky hands, do limited sparring games, spar lightly, spar at full speed and strength.
