WHAT IS KUNG FU?

Kung Fu means something like "time and energy," referring to the time and energy, or more simply, the effort, necessary to achieve proficiency and excellence in general and especially in Chinese martial arts. Wu Shu is another term for Chinese martial arts. It roughly translates as "war arts" but in practice refers to martial arts of the People’s Republic of China after the Cultural Revolution. As distinct from Chinese Kung Fu not affected by the Cultural Revolution, it emphasizes beauty of expression as opposed to fighting application. That is not to say that Wu Shu practitioners cannot fight.

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of styles of traditional Chinese martial arts and Kung Fu. Some of the chief characteristics of them are that they generally use all parts of the body in fighting and all strive to increase health as well as teach fighting. Some styles of Kung Fu emphasize kicking, some punching, some close fighting, some wrestling, some joint-locks.

A traditional Kung Fu School is headed by a Shifu, which is a general term for teacher. Traditional terms, methods and attitudes are still used for their effectiveness in teaching fighting and developing strength physically and emotionally. Moreover, Kung Fu as a cultural phenomenon cannot be entirely separated from its cultural context without something being lost.
